The UCSD Libraries launched their new website on December 16. The site has an enhanced graphical interface, as well as improved functionality and navigation.

For now, you don’t need to change your bookmarks. http://scilib.ucsd.edu/ will redirect to the new S&E homepage, and http://libraries.ucsd.edu/ will redirect to the new UCSD Libraries homepage. Roger, the Databases and E-Journals, Sage (the e-resource directory), Reserves and other resources are still there.

As you start using the S&E Website, please keep in mind that we are still migrating and reorganizing content from the old website. Some pages, like the CoreChem page, are still in the old website but will be migrated shortly. And we’re still “tweaking” a number of pages, including fixing links and reformatting.

We welcome your feedback, comments and suggestions. Each page, in the lower-right corner, has a “Send Us Your Feedback” link you can use. You can also email us at science@ucsd.edu.

The steps for finding your reserve books haven’t changed. Start at the Course Reserves page and use the drop-down menu to select the department and course, then click “Items on Reserve at the Science and Engineering Library”.

IMPORTANT: S&E reserve books are arranged by author (instead of call number like the SSHL reserves), so you’ll need the author’s name when you come to the desk to get your book.

RefWorks has announced their October 2006 batch of new features:

RefGrab-It - for PC and Mac
RefGrab-It works with your browser to capture bibliographic information from web pages. Under Tools in RefWorks, you’ll see a RefGrab-It option that will take you to a page with the IE and Firefox bookmarklets (just drag the appropriate link to your browser’s bookmark toolbar). Once you’ve imported the reference, you can add other fields like Date Accessed and Descriptors.

Note: This bookmarklet opens up new browser windows for 1) the RefGrab-It page that reviews what’s been captured for the webpage and offers the option to import into RefWorks, and 2) the Import Completed page. If you click Import on that review page a second time, your reference will be imported into your RefWorks account again. Duplicate references can be located and deleted easily.

RefShare Enhancements

Create an RSS Feed for Your Shared Folder or Database

Easier Linking to a Single Reference in a Shared Folder or Database

Custom Links to Groups of Records or Search Results in a Shared Folder or Database

Other improvements:

EndNote 10 libraries can now be directly imported into RefWorks

The Term Assistant feature (used when entering or editing references) can now be disabled from the Tools, Customize area.

The S&E Library now has a scanner attached to the public Microsoft Office workstation (at the beginning of the row of Infostations along the windows).

Using the scanner is pretty basic–place your item face-down on the glass and hit the scan button to start the process. There’s no OCR component, so text can only be scanned as an image. You can then move the scanned images to a folder on the desktop and then save them to your flash drive.

Saving the scanned images to a flash drive is free, or you can print to the local black/white printer for 10c/page with an Imprints card.

The actual printer is located in the Social Sciences and Humanities Library in the west wing of Geisel Library. There’s a networked printing station that you can use to release the print job you’ve sent from any of the building’s Infostations.

You still need a white Imprints printing card to release the print jobs, and the cost for color printing is $.50/page (vs. $.05/page with black/white printing).

Students using the ACS computers in the S&E Library will still use the color printer in 2095 (aka “Lab A”). The printer name is “color21.”

You can now set up RSS feeds for search alerts in Web of Science and Biosis Previews, plus citation alert feeds in Web of Science. The procedure to create and capture these feeds is a bit convoluted, so we have added the directions ( with screencaps) to our list of RSS feeds for science and engineering databases.

Key points:

You must have a Web of Knowledge account, which you set up with an e-mail address and password. You can get to Web of Knowledge from Web of Science or Biosis Previews.

You need to follow the steps to create and name your feed like you would for an e-mail alert–except you just don’t check the box for “Send Me E-mail Alerts”.

To get the actual feed, click the to open up the feed in another browser window (don’t right-click to copy). Copy the URL that appears in the address bar of the new browser window and paste that into your RSS reader.

Like the e-mail alerts, these searches will be saved to your Web of Knowledge account.
