ACS Undergrad Symposium Literature Award

Last Thursday the American Chemical Society - Student Affiliates held their 2nd Annual Undergraduate Research Symposium. Among the awards given that night was one from the S&E Library for best use of the literature, which was awarded to Margaret Yandell. She will receive a $125 bookstore giftcard, and her winning poster will be on display in the library starting next week.

Asian American and Pacific Islander Heritage Month - May 2008

The Science & Engineering Library celebrates Asian and Pacific Islander cultures and achievements this month with an exhibit featuring prominent scientists, inventions, and achievements of Asian and Pacific Island origins. Come read about the technology of gunpowder, silk, ceramics, the outrigger canoe, Korean metallurgy, and other inventions. Read about prominent Asian-American Nobel Prize winners Yuan T. Lee (Chemistry), Subrahmanyan Chandrasekhar (Physics), Tsung-Dao Lee (Physics), Steven Chu (Physics), H. Gobind Khorana (Medicine), and Samuel C.C. Ting (Physics). And find out about the many achievements of UCSD’s own Y.C. Bert Fung, founder of the Department of Bioengineering and recipient of numerous awards. Through the end of Spring quarter.

On Exhibit in S&E

Stop by the S&E Library and take a look at these new and continuing exhibits–

Balsa Wood Tower
A team of six undergraduates in Structural Engineering won first place in the Fifth Annual Seismic Design Competition, held in New Orleans in February. The winning structure, a balsa wood tower, was constructed to withstand simulations of three significant 20th-century earthquakes. More information. The tower is on permanent display at the entrance to the S&E Library, along with the team’s poster. Congratulations to team captain Ruben Soto and his fellow team members: Palak Shah, Carolina Margarito, Jennifer Heredia, Michelle Yokota and Jorge Ortiz.

MAE 156A Robot
The winning robot in Dr. Nate Delson’s Fall 2007 MAE 156A class is also featured in S&E. Built by team members Anson Brune, Chau Nguyen, Geoff Rosenberg, and Bryan Urquhart, the robot senses the heights of a row of blocks and plots them on a grid. Sounds simple, but take a look! Calculate Your Carbon Footprint
Your carbon footprint is a measurement of the relative impact of your individual actions on global climate change. The average American’s carbon footprint is the equivalent of 27 tons of carbon dioxide per year. Compare that to the worldwide average of 5.5 per person. Come to the Science & Engineering Library as we celebrate Earth Week and see which lifestyle factors influence your carbon footprint. Our Earth Week display also includes information about Green Engineering, (a web-based carbon footprint calculator), and a listing of Earth Week events at UCSD. A selection of S&E books on climate change is also on display. Through May 2.

Mathematics Awareness Month
April is Math Awareness Month and this year’s theme is “Mathematics and Voting.” Learn about the role math plays in voting methods, and how the outcome of elections can vary drastically depending upon which method is used. How will your vote be counted this November? More info.. Also on display is a series of 13 “Mathematical Moments” – how math affects our everyday lives and the technology around us, e.g. solving Sudoku, eliminating spam, searching the web, predicting storm surge, and more. Math majors will also be interested in an accompanying display on careers in mathematics. Through May 2.

The Science of Beer and Wine Display

In the ’spirit’ of the SunGod Festival, we’ve created a display in the Science & Engineering Library that highlights the science of beer and wine. Come to S&E to read about the processes for making beer and wine, and see photos of beer crystallization under a microscope. We’ve also pulled out related books from our collection for additional reading.

In addition to the SunGod Festival, we’re also celebrating two other UCSD events, both of which reflect the Science and Engineering focus of the campus: The Junkyard Derby and the Watermelon Drop. Please stop by and enjoy them all during May and June.

Math Awareness Month

April is Math Awareness Month - and this year’s theme is Math and the Brain. The S&E Library is exhibiting several books on various mathematical and computational applications and imaging of neurons and the brain. And see the full-scale poster on our display panel on the 2nd floor, courtesy of the Society for Industrial and Applied Mathematics (SIAM), along with relevant SIAM News articles on advances in neuroscience & mathematics.

Math, Computer Science, and interested Engineering students - Did you know that SIAM grants free memberships to UCSD students because of our Academic membership? Grad students may fill out the application at the SIAM student site and undergrads should contact the UCSD Math Department to have your name sent to SIAM.

S&E Librarians @ Research Expo

Where will the S&E Librarians be Thursday morning?
Hanging out at the Jacobs School of Engineering Research Expo, of course!!

We’ll be checking out the grad student posters and selecting 2 posters to award Best Use of the Literature. Prize this year: $125 bookstore gift certificate.

And for something new this year, presenters will also be able to display their posters in the library (S&E Library Showcase) for Spring quarter. We’ll be handing out invitations during the poster session.

Student Posters on Exhibit in S&E

Student engineering posters from two groups are on display in the Science & Engineering Library through January. The student chapter of IEEE is displaying posters on the IEEE Robo Magellan Project, the Student UAV Project, and the IEEE Natcar Project.

In addition, nine posters from the TIES (Teams in Engineering Service) program can be seen in various locations on the main level of S&E. Stop in and take a look!

National Inventors Month Exhibit

Exhibit for the National inventors Month is up on display.

The exhibit features some of the the greatest inventions and inventors in Science and Technology with historic photos and drawings of the original inventions on a collage.

Featured books on display include everything you need to know about patenting your invention/s.

Science Goes Graphic!

As part of the Geisel Goes Graphic collaborative exhibit, the S&E Library is exhibiting graphic books covering scientific topics, including The Science of Superheroes and The Science of Supervillains by Lois Gresh and Robert Weinberg and several books by Larry Gonick (The Cartoon Guide to Physics, and The Cartoon Guide to Statistics).

A companion exhibit displays information on the graphic science book genre - major themes, authors, and web resources. Read interviews with authors Jim Ottaviani and Jim Kakalios, and see scientific comics on nanotechnology (Meet the Goos), and Heroes in Engineering. Vintage superhero comic books from 1985-1987 are also on view.

During the week of October 10, please drop by the S&E Library from noon to 1:00 p.m. and have your photograph taken with Spiderman!
