New INSPEC Interface

February 2, 2008 on 3:42 pm | In Database News | Comments Off

The INSPEC article database on the Ovid platform will change this weekend to the new OvidSP interface. Changes include:

  • Truncate terms with * (asterisk), commonly used in most other databases & search engines.
  • Option to search “related terms”
  • Additional sorting options for your results
  • View abstracts within the results display, without going to another page
  • RSS feeds for search alerts (you’ll need to use or set up your personal INSPEC/OVID account)
  • Narrow results to view top subjects, authors and journals

Search Options are: Basic, Find Citation, Search Tools, Search Fields, and Advanced (”Classic” Syntax).

  • We recommend using Basic Search only if you want a few articles, as the quirks of natural language searching & relevancy ranking with Basic OvidSP make it difficult for physical science & engineering researchers to retrieve all the articles on a specific topic.
  • If your aim is a thorough review of the literature for your dissertation, thesis, book or article, Advanced Search allows you to search by Keyword, Author, Title, and, along with Search Fields, allows you to drill through the thousands of articles indexed to get what you need.

New Look for Web of Science

January 24, 2008 on 12:24 am | In Database News | Comments Off

Web of Science (and Biosis) have a new look.

Instead of the 6 preset search fields, you can customize each one to whatever you like.

Web of Science

The results screen has also been reorganized, with the “Refine Results” options now placed more prominently on the left side. Sorting, Analyze Results, and Create Citation Report are to the right of the “Go” button. You can still mark records, export them to EndNote or EndNote Web, and use UC-eLinks to get to the articles. Use the “Sign In” option at the top of the screen to access your e-mail and/or RSS search alerts.

SciFinder Scholar Update

January 22, 2008 on 1:07 am | In Database News | Comments Off

1. As of Jan 2, the following versions of SciFinder were discontinued. If you were using these, please upgrade to SciFinder 2007.

  • SciFinder Scholar 2004.2 (MAC OS 9 and Windows)
  • SciFinder Scholar MAC OS X 1.0

CAS also no longer supports Macintosh OS 9 as of January 2, 2008.

2. A problem with SFS 2007 has surfaced for Mac OS X Leopard (10.5) users.

The only new Macintosh issue stems from changes that Apple makes with OS 10.5 — SciFinder 2007 will run under that OS, if one does a Get Info on the SciFinder Scholar 2007 for Mac OS X application package and checks the Run with Rosetta box. Please see:

  • Additional sorting options for your results
  • View abstracts within the results display, without going to another page
  • RSS feeds for search alerts (you’ll need to use or set up your personal INSPEC/OVID account)

ChemDraw @ UCSD!!

October 6, 2007 on 1:33 am | In Database News | Comments Off

Are you a UCSD affiliate (faculty/staff/student) and need ChemDraw? Well, we have it.

UCSD now has a sitewide license for ChemBioOffice Ultra, paid for by the Department of Chemistry and Biochemistry and the Science & Engineering Library. The license includes software to download and install on your computer, as well as access to some online databases.

  • ChemBioOffice for Windows, a productivity software suite that includes ChemBioDraw (formerly ChemDraw)
  • ChemBioDraw for Mac, which doesn’t have a lot of the extra software included with the Windows version, but it has the key ChemDraw piece
  • Access to the following online databases: ChemINDEX (chemical property data), ChemACX (chemical suppliers and prices), Ashgate Drugs (basic info on 7,900 common drugs), and 2 NCI databases (DTP AIDS Antiviral and Human Tumor Cell Line Screens)

Installation and support information are on the S&E Library Website at http://scilib.ucsd.edu/corechem/chemoffice.html. Important things to remember:

  1. Start the ACS form at http://software.ucsd.edu/productfiles/chemoffice.php. Enter your name/dept/status/email. This will take you to the UCSD site license page at CambridgeSoft to continue the registration process.
  2. If you don’t already have a CambridgeSoft account based on your UCSD email address, you’ll need to create an account during this process in order to download the software AND use the databases.

CSA Databases - New Alerting

September 12, 2007 on 10:21 am | In Database News, Tech Tools | Comments Off

As BML reported earlier this week, CSA has created a new personalization portal for their databases, including METADEX, Aerospace & High Technology, Earthquake Engineering Abstracts, Engineered Materials Abstracts, GeoRef, Meteorological & Geophysical Abstracts, and the SAGE materials science e-journal collection.

From the search results, click Alert Me. Log in to your CSA profile–now called My Research (you can also create an account from here). In My Research, you can then set up your search alert to receive new citations by e-mail or RSS.

You can also get to My Research from any of the CSA databases by clicking Please log in to My Research. From this page you can create new alerts or manage existing alerts, and set default database and interface options for searching.

New Web of Science Preview

August 19, 2007 on 10:18 pm | In Database News | Comments Off

You now have a chance to preview the new interface for Web of Science and Biosis Previews.

When you go into either database, click the “Preview the New Version” at the top in the Web of Knowledge bar. In the new window, you’ll see a link to launch the new version, and below that a link to provide feedback and comments to ISI on the new interface.

The new “All Databases” tab is the previous Cross Search that allows you to search both databases simultaneously (though with fewer searching options). The “Select a Database” tab is where you can select just Web of Science or Biosis Preview, which will then show up as a new tab.

The other major change is how the results display. Now left of the results, you’ll notice an expanded set of options to refine your search. Some of the options to manage results for saving/printing/e-mail have also changed.

SciFinder Scholar 2007 Release

August 8, 2007 on 8:40 pm | In Database News | Comments Off

SciFinder Scholar 2007 (for both PC and Mac) is now available. UCSD faculty, staff and students can download the client software from the UC SciFinder site.

  1. Review and accept the user agreement before downloading the software.
  2. PC users: You have TWO files to download–don’t forget the site.prf file.

What’s new in SciFinder Scholar 2007:

  • Along with analyzing and refining results, you can now categorize them into groups and subgroups and select the sets you want to retrieve.
  • Save answer sets to your hard drive, then reopen to view and refine the search results in a later SciFinder session.
    • Combine the results of your active search with one of your saved searches.

  • Export CHEMCATS records of commercial suppliers into Excel.
  • Launch a new structure search by clicking on any structure from an answer set.
  • Print substances answers in a 1-4 column grid.

Please contact the Chemistry Librarian if you have any questions about installing or using SciFinder Scholar.

Facelift for UC-eLinks

July 29, 2007 on 7:09 pm | In Database News, Journals | Comments Off

The UC-eLinks display has been tweaked and re-organized into a more logical display.

If you access UC-eLinks from a citation in one the databases, you’ll see something like this, where your options are arranged based on 1.) Get it online, 2.) Get it in print at UCSD, and 3.) Request it via Interlibrary Loan.

If you access UC-eLinks from a journal record in Roger, it’ll look like this:

Roger [Keyword] Searching Improvements

June 25, 2007 on 4:01 pm | In Books and Encyclopedias, Database News | Comments Off

When you do keyword searches in Roger, how do you like to see your results displayed? By relevance? By date? Now you can have both!!

The results of your Roger keyword search will still display first by relevance: those 5 to 1-star groupings, each one starting with the most recent title.

roger11.gif

NOW, you can change the results display to the DATE option to see the most recent titles first (regardless of relevancy) or by TITLE for an A-Z list. The ‘date’ option was the way it always looked before we moved to the relevancy view.
