SciFinder Update for OS 10.5
July 14, 2008 on 4:18 pm | In Database News | Comments OffThe SciFinder Scholar client has been updated for OS 10.5 (Leopard) users. The new file (Sfs2007a.dmg) can be downloaded from the UC SciFinder Scholar site.
This update was only to fix compatibility issues that were discovered with OS 10.5 and does not include new features. SciFinder Scholar 2007 is still the most current version for both PC and Mac users.
Roger links to Google, NextGen Melvyl, etc.
June 2, 2008 on 1:04 am | In Books and Encyclopedias, Database News | Comments OffWhen you search Roger, you’ll now see some links in a table on the right-hand side. Clicking these will rerun your search in that particular database or catalog.
From the results page, you can now run your search again in
- Circuit (SD Libraries)
- the NextGen Melvyl pilot (UC Libraries and beyond)
- Google Books
- Google Scholar
From the single record view, you can run the search again in Circuit, NextGen Melvyl, Google Books, AND Amazon. Under the list is the “Send by Text Message” feature if you want to send yourself the book’s call number.
NextGen Melvyl Catalog
May 27, 2008 on 12:39 pm | In Books and Encyclopedias, Database News | Comments OffINTRODUCING NEXT-GENERATION MELVYL (http://ucsd.worldcat.org)
The UC Libraries have launched Next-Generation Melvyl, a potential replacement for the UC-wide Melvyl Catalog.
- Through a single interface, NextGen Melvyl searches holdings in:
- UCSD, all UC Libraries, and libraries around the world (with UCSD stuff listed first)
- as well as:
- UC books digitized by Google
- citations for articles in MEDLINE (PubMed) and ArticleFirst, which includes some physical science and engineering articles
- Throughout the pilot, the current Melvyl Catalog and all its functionality will be maintained and available as usual.
- Not all current library holdings are represented in the pilot.
- Users can request items held elsewhere, both within the UC system and beyond. However, we recommend using Circuit to request books from our Circuit partners (SDSU, etc.).
NextGen Melvyl will be available for at least 6 months and is very much a work in progress as improvements continue to be made. YOUR FEEDBACK DURING THIS PILOT PHASE IS VITAL. Please test NextGen Melvyl as frequently and as vigorously as possible, and use the “Survey - Your Voice Counts!” link located in upper-right corner to give us that feedback.
Link to Google Books in Melvyl
April 26, 2008 on 11:35 pm | In Books and Encyclopedias, Database News | Comments OffYou will now see links to Google Books in Melvyl search results. Depending on the book’s copyright status you’ll see:
- More About this Book, which includes a brief description of the book, reviews, references to the book on other websites, and links to Amazon and other sites to buy or borrow the book.
- Preview This Book Online! With these books, you can search the text of the book and view a limited number of pages.
- Read This Book Online! This is the “full view” of the book, and you can view every page. You may also be able to download a PDF copy of the book. To see an example, go to Melvyl and search for Einstein’s theories of relativity and gravitation.
More information about UC’s mass digitization projects, including the one with Google.
Cambridge Structural Database 2008
April 10, 2008 on 11:40 am | In Database News | Comments OffCambridge Structural Database (CSD) 2008 is available.
Due to the size of these programs, you cannot directly download the files to your computer and install. Instead, you will copy the ISO files to your computer, then burn those files onto CDs, and then use the CDs to install in the programs. Instructions for doing this are on our CSD Guide.
The ISO files and the new site and confirmation codes are at the UCLA CSD site. Proxy or VPN access is required to get those codes, which you will need the first time you run CSD on your computer and when you download the January 2008 content update from the Cambridge Crystallographic Data Centre.
Please contact the Chemistry Librarian if you have any questions.
CrossFire 7.1 for Beilstein and Gmelin
March 25, 2008 on 1:40 pm | In Database News | Comments OffCrossFire, the software you download and install on your computer to access the Beilstein and Gmelin databases, has recently been updated. Information and directions on downloading/installing CrossFire 7.1 are on our site.
CrossFire 7.1 supports Windows 2000/XP/Vista and connects to UC-eLinks. For each reference, you can click the full-text button to open UC-eLinks and connect to the article if we have it online, as well as check our holdings in Roger and get a Request/ILL form if needed. However, CrossFire 7.1 does not have Autonom.
Please read the section TO INSTALL CROSSFIRE 7.1, as there are differences between CrossFire 7.1 and the previous 7.0/6.0 versions. The files are not yet on the UC CrossFire site, and you will need to supply some additional information during the installation to enable UC-eLinks.
If you have questions about CrossFire, Beilstein or Gmelin, please contact Teri Vogel.
Knovel - New Interface, and problems
March 3, 2008 on 11:47 am | In Books and Encyclopedias, Database News, Known Problems and Down Time | Comments OffLast week, Knovel released a new interface (the old www.knovel.com URL now redirects to the new site, as do the links in Roger for all the Knovel titles).
- Major Changes:
- The new site defaults to Basic Search, with the actual search box in the upper left. The Fielded Search is the advanced search where you can use the drop-down menus to search by keyword or property. The Browse tab will bring up the familiar list of subject areas that you can click to bring up lists of titles, as well as view new titles, titles with productivity tools, etc. User Preferences is not yet available.
- The “Search Within This Title” feature has disappeared. We have already contacted Knovel about bringing it back.
There have been some performance issues with the new interface, though most of them appear to be resolved as of March 2. However, please contact support@knovel.com if you experience any problems using Knovel, such as:
- The redirect to the new site takes too long.
- You get error messages when you try to access tables and graphs identified in your search results.
- You lose your list of relevant pages, tables and graphs while navigating through the list of titles that came up in your search, and instead get the full table of contents for those titles.
Please contact the S&E Library if you have questions about using Knovel or other science/engineering resources.
New INSPEC Interface
February 2, 2008 on 3:42 pm | In Database News | Comments OffThe INSPEC article database on the Ovid platform will change this weekend to the new OvidSP interface. Changes include:
- Truncate terms with * (asterisk), commonly used in most other databases & search engines.
- Option to search “related terms”
- Additional sorting options for your results
- View abstracts within the results display, without going to another page
- RSS feeds for search alerts (you’ll need to use or set up your personal INSPEC/OVID account)
- Narrow results to view top subjects, authors and journals
Search Options are: Basic, Find Citation, Search Tools, Search Fields, and Advanced (”Classic” Syntax).
- We recommend using Basic Search only if you want a few articles, as the quirks of natural language searching & relevancy ranking with Basic OvidSP make it difficult for physical science & engineering researchers to retrieve all the articles on a specific topic.
- If your aim is a thorough review of the literature for your dissertation, thesis, book or article, Advanced Search allows you to search by Keyword, Author, Title, and, along with Search Fields, allows you to drill through the thousands of articles indexed to get what you need.

Have a questions about INSPEC or Web of Science or any of our research databases? Ask A Librarian - we’re here to help you!
New Look for Web of Science
January 24, 2008 on 12:24 am | In Database News | Comments OffWeb of Science (and Biosis) have a new look.
Instead of the 6 preset search fields, you can customize each one to whatever you like.

The results screen has also been reorganized, with the “Refine Results” options now placed more prominently on the left side. Sorting, Analyze Results, and Create Citation Report are to the right of the “Go” button. You can still mark records, export them to EndNote or EndNote Web, and use UC-eLinks to get to the articles. Use the “Sign In” option at the top of the screen to access your e-mail and/or RSS search alerts.

SciFinder Scholar Update
January 22, 2008 on 1:07 am | In Database News | Comments Off1. As of Jan 2, the following versions of SciFinder were discontinued. If you were using these, please upgrade to SciFinder 2007.
- SciFinder Scholar 2004.2 (MAC OS 9 and Windows)
- SciFinder Scholar MAC OS X 1.0
CAS also no longer supports Macintosh OS 9 as of January 2, 2008.
2. A problem with SFS 2007 has surfaced for Mac OS X Leopard (10.5) users.
The only new Macintosh issue stems from changes that Apple makes with OS 10.5 — SciFinder 2007 will run under that OS, if one does a Get Info on the SciFinder Scholar 2007 for Mac OS X application package and checks the Run with Rosetta box. Please see:
