Nature Geoscience, Nature Protocols, and backfiles

March 7, 2008 on 5:11 pm | In Journals | Comments Off

Two new Nature journals are available to the UCSD community.

Nature Geoscience covers all aspects of earth sciences, including Atmospheric Science, Geochemistry, Geoinformatics, Geophysics, Mineralogy, Planetary Science, Seismology, and Space Physics.

Nature Protocols is an online resource of laboratory protocols, written in a step-by-step “recipe” style so you can immediately apply it to your own research. You can search Nature Protocols by keyword or browse by category: Cheminformatics, Nanotechnology, Spectroscopy, Detection and Probing, Isolation and Purification, Molecular Interactions, Structural Analysis, etc.

We also have added extended backfile access for the flagship Nature journal, now online going back to volume 1, 1869.

New Wiley Journals: ChemMedChem, etc.

IUBMB Life (International Union of Biochemistry and Molecular Biology)
Canadian Journal of Chemical Engineering
Scanning, The Journal of Scanning Microscopies

Physics Today Archive

March 5, 2008 on 10:56 pm | In Journals | Comments Off

UCSD now has the Physics Today Archive online, from 1985 to 12 months ago. AIP plans to digitize all issues back to the magazine’s launch in 1948 to create a complete archive.

The archive does not include the last 12 months, but some of the content in those issues is freely available (and we do have them at the S&E Library).

Knovel - New Interface, and problems

March 3, 2008 on 11:47 am | In Books and Encyclopedias, Database News, Known Problems and Down Time | Comments Off

Last week, Knovel released a new interface (the old www.knovel.com URL now redirects to the new site, as do the links in Roger for all the Knovel titles).

    Major Changes:

  • The new site defaults to Basic Search, with the actual search box in the upper left. The Fielded Search is the advanced search where you can use the drop-down menus to search by keyword or property. The Browse tab will bring up the familiar list of subject areas that you can click to bring up lists of titles, as well as view new titles, titles with productivity tools, etc. User Preferences is not yet available.
  • The “Search Within This Title” feature has disappeared. We have already contacted Knovel about bringing it back.

There have been some performance issues with the new interface, though most of them appear to be resolved as of March 2. However, please contact support@knovel.com if you experience any problems using Knovel, such as:

  • The redirect to the new site takes too long.
  • You get error messages when you try to access tables and graphs identified in your search results.
  • You lose your list of relevant pages, tables and graphs while navigating through the list of titles that came up in your search, and instead get the full table of contents for those titles.

Please contact the S&E Library if you have questions about using Knovel or other science/engineering resources.
