SciVee Talk @ BML, 2/28

January 28, 2008 on 5:31 pm | In News & Events | Comments Off

On February 28, 2008, Dr. Philip E. Bourne, a Professor in the UCSD Department of Pharmacology and the Skaggs School of Pharmacy and Pharmaceutical Sciences, will give a talk at the Biomedical Library from noon-1pm, “SciVee: A New Form of Scientific Communication and Dissemination.”

Today’s students, who are the leading scientists of tomorrow, are well-versed in the use of online video and social networking in their personal lives, yet these habits have yet to significantly impact their professional lives. SciVee (http://www.scivee.tv) is one of a number of internet sites that is attempting to bring about this change. A unique feature of SciVee is the integration of open access paper content with a video made by the paper authors in what is termed a “pubcast.” This and other features will be described in the context of whether the libraries might become the scholarly video store of the future.

Dr. Bourne is the Co-Director of the Protein Data Bank, and the Founding Editor-in-Chief of the open access journal, PLoS Computational Biology.

This is the fourth talk in the Biomedical Library lunchtime lecture series. Space is limited so please RSVP to Vicky Anderson at vkanderson@ucsd.edu by February 25. Feel free to bring a discreet lunch; cookies and water will be provided.

New Look for Web of Science

January 24, 2008 on 12:24 am | In Database News | Comments Off

Web of Science (and Biosis) have a new look.

Instead of the 6 preset search fields, you can customize each one to whatever you like.

Web of Science

The results screen has also been reorganized, with the “Refine Results” options now placed more prominently on the left side. Sorting, Analyze Results, and Create Citation Report are to the right of the “Go” button. You can still mark records, export them to EndNote or EndNote Web, and use UC-eLinks to get to the articles. Use the “Sign In” option at the top of the screen to access your e-mail and/or RSS search alerts.

SciFinder Scholar Update

January 22, 2008 on 1:07 am | In Database News | Comments Off

1. As of Jan 2, the following versions of SciFinder were discontinued. If you were using these, please upgrade to SciFinder 2007.

  • SciFinder Scholar 2004.2 (MAC OS 9 and Windows)
  • SciFinder Scholar MAC OS X 1.0

CAS also no longer supports Macintosh OS 9 as of January 2, 2008.

2. A problem with SFS 2007 has surfaced for Mac OS X Leopard (10.5) users.

The only new Macintosh issue stems from changes that Apple makes with OS 10.5 — SciFinder 2007 will run under that OS, if one does a Get Info on the SciFinder Scholar 2007 for Mac OS X application package and checks the Run with Rosetta box. Please see:

NEW LIBRARY WEBSITE

January 6, 2008 on 7:44 pm | In News & Events, Tech Tools | Comments Off

The UCSD Libraries launched their new website on December 16. The site has an enhanced graphical interface, as well as improved functionality and navigation.

For now, you don’t need to change your bookmarks. http://scilib.ucsd.edu/ will redirect to the new S&E homepage, and http://libraries.ucsd.edu/ will redirect to the new UCSD Libraries homepage. Roger, the Databases and E-Journals, Sage (the e-resource directory), Reserves and other resources are still there.

As you start using the S&E Website, please keep in mind that we are still migrating and reorganizing content from the old website. Some pages, like the CoreChem page, are still in the old website but will be migrated shortly. And we’re still “tweaking” a number of pages, including fixing links and reformatting.

We welcome your feedback, comments and suggestions. Each page, in the lower-right corner, has a “Send Us Your Feedback” link you can use. You can also email us at science@ucsd.edu.

Reserves - Big Change

January 6, 2008 on 4:49 pm | In Books and Encyclopedias, News & Events, Tech Tools | Comments Off

Starting this quarter, all lower division math and science books that were on reserve at the SSHL desk are now at the S&E Library with the other math, science and engineering reserve books.

The steps for finding your reserve books haven’t changed. Start at the Course Reserves page and use the drop-down menu to select the department and course, then click “Items on Reserve at the Science and Engineering Library”.

IMPORTANT: S&E reserve books are arranged by author (instead of call number like the SSHL reserves), so you’ll need the author’s name when you come to the desk to get your book.

Impact Factor Data: Editorial & Rebuttal

January 2, 2008 on 3:01 pm | In Science News & Hot Topics | Comments Off

Show me the data (Rossner M, Van Epps H, Hill E)
Journal of Cell Biology, Vol. 179, No. 6, 1091-1092

The integrity of data, and transparency about their acquisition, are vital to science. The impact factor data that are gathered and sold by Thomson Scientific (formerly the Institute of Scientific Information, or ISI) have a strong influence on the scientific community, affecting decisions on where to publish, whom to promote or hire, the success of grant applications, and even salary bonuses. Yet, members of the community seem to have little understanding of how impact factors are determined, and, to our knowledge, no one has independently audited the underlying data to validate their reliability.

Thomson Scientific Corrects Inaccuracies in Editorial (Pendlebury DA)

A recent editorial in the Journal of Cell Biology by Rossner, Van Epps, and Hill argues that Thomson Scientific’s impact factor measure for the evaluation of journals should not be trusted since an article data set purchased from Thomson by The Rockefeller University Press did not exactly replicate the Journal Citation Reports data for its own — and selected other — journals.

When these data were questioned by The Rockefeller University Press, Thomson staff explained precisely the content of the data, as well as its derivation and use. Unfortunately for the readers of the Rossner editorial, the authors misunderstood much and as a result, misled readers about several matters, not only regarding the data but what Thomson representatives did and said from June to September 2007 in many email exchanges.

Rossner is Executive Director of the Rockefeller University Press, Van Epps is Executive Editor of Journal of Experimental Medicine, and Hill is Executive Editor of Journal of Cell Biology. Pendlebury is with the Research Services Group at Thomson Scientific.
