Faculty: Web of Science Focus Group

February 27, 2007 on 11:57 am | In Faculty News | Comments Off

Thomson Scientific, producers of the Web of Science database, is looking for UCSD faculty/researchers to participate in an online bulletin board focus group. The focus of this discussion will be citation usage in ISI Web of Knowledge/Web of Science.

They are offering a $150 in American Express Gift Cheques to those who complete all aspects of this project.

A bulletin board focus group is a moderated, on-going Web-based chat, where participants can log on to answer posted questions at their convenience during the 3-day study period. Several questions will be posted each day, and participants will be asked to visit the site at least once each day to submit answers to the questions, skim others’ responses, and answer them if they choose.

The nice part of this process is that participants may visit the site at any time during the 3-day session, day or night, making it convenient to take part in the study. The total time investment is about 3 hours.

The group will begin on Wednesday, February 28th and run through Friday, March 2nd.

Please click on http://websurveyor.net/wsb.dll/83231/Onlinegrouprecruit-Researchers.htm to answer a few background questions. Once that is done, you will be contacted by someone from Thomson Scientific with details about the online group.

Nature Nanotechnology & Nature Photonics

February 23, 2007 on 3:08 pm | In Journals | Comments Off

Nature’s newest journals, Nature Nanotechnology and Nature Photonics, are now available at UCSD.

The multidisciplinary Nature Nanotechnology (launched Fall 2006) will publish significant and quality papers covering all aspects of nanoscience and nanotechnology, including “the design, characterization and production of structures, devices and systems that involve the manipulation and control of materials and phenomena at atomic, molecular and macromolecular scales.” Along with research articles, readers will also get news and views, review articles, letters, commentary, book reviews and research highlights.

Launched this year, Nature Photonics seeks to publish the same high-level quality research as other NPG physical sciences journals, covering everything from “the fundamental properties of light and how it interacts with matter through to the latest designs of optoelectronic device and emerging applications that exploit photons.” Readers can expect to find articles on topics like lasers, sensors, biophotonics, and quantum optics. Along with research and review articles, research highlights, letters and news and views, Nature Photonics will also take a look at the technology/business side with sections like “Out of the Lab” and “Product Focus.”

Where will the S&E Librarians be Thursday morning?
Hanging out at the Jacobs School of Engineering Research Expo, of course!!

We’ll be checking out the grad student posters and selecting 2 posters to award Best Use of the Literature. Prize this year: $125 bookstore gift certificate.

And for something new this year, presenters will also be able to display their posters in the library (S&E Library Showcase) for Spring quarter. We’ll be handing out invitations during the poster session.

Asbeck Elected to National Academy of Engineering

February 14, 2007 on 4:35 pm | In Faculty News, Science News & Hot Topics | Comments Off

Last week, ECE Professor Peter Asbeck was one of 64 men and women elected to the National Academy of Engineering for ‘contributions to heterojunction bipolar transistor and integrated circuit technology.’ This brings the current number of NAE members at UCSD to 16.

Peter Asbeck’s technical innovations have made their way into about 95 percent of the approximately one billion cell phones sold in 2006. Without the technology he pioneered – heterojunction bipolar transistor or HBTs – we might be walking around with cell phone batteries the size of bricks. Asbeck’s work is also influencing the field of optical networking, and it will likely turn up in many of the uncharted regions of our wireless, handheld future.
