Check out their additon/renovation project page for artist drawings, photos and floor plans of the new library space.

Check Out Our Information Technology Resources

The UCSD Science & Engineering Library is a valuable resource for both the amateur and seasoned systems administrator. We have created a page highlighting virtual reference tools from the S&E Library, including e-journals, article databases and dictionaries compiled from Sage, UCSD Libraries’ collection of electronic resources, with a focus on resources relevant to information technology professionals. Check it out:

RSS - Web of Science & Biosis

July 20, 2006 on 2:20 pm | In Database News, Tech Tools | Comments Off

You can now set up RSS feeds for search alerts in Web of Science and Biosis Previews, plus citation alert feeds in Web of Science. The procedure to create and capture these feeds is a bit convoluted, so we have added the directions ( with screencaps) to our list of RSS feeds for science and engineering databases.

    Key points:

  • You must have a Web of Knowledge account, which you set up with an e-mail address and password. You can get to Web of Knowledge from Web of Science or Biosis Previews.
  • You need to follow the steps to create and name your feed like you would for an e-mail alert–except you just don’t check the box for “Send Me E-mail Alerts”.
  • To get the actual feed, click the rss.gif to open up the feed in another browser window (don’t right-click to copy). Copy the URL that appears in the address bar of the new browser window and paste that into your RSS reader.

Like the e-mail alerts, these searches will be saved to your Web of Knowledge account.

Web of Science/Biosis Update

July 18, 2006 on 11:04 am | In Database News | Comments Off

ISI has just updated Web of Knowledge (Web of Science and Biosis Previews).

    The major changes:

  • Phase searching is no longer implied. natural products synthesis is now equivalent to natural AND products AND synthesis, where the words can appear anywhere in the record (5,857 results). Quotation marks must now be used to search phrases: “natural products synthesis” (145 results).
  • The new Author Finder is a 4-step guided search to help you get just the article you’re looking for. After you enter an author name and select the variant you want to search on (YANG J, YANG J*, YANG JA*, YANG JB*, etc.), you then narrow the results by subject category (like PHYSICAL SCIENCES) and then by institution (like UNIV CALIF SAN DIEGO). These last two criteria are set up as lists where you can check off the ones you want to see.
  • RSS feeds for search results.

New Book Lists in Roger

The New Book lists for Roger have been restored and are back on the S&E homepage (in the right column, under New to S&E Collections). We’ve split them up differently this time, so now there are 3 lists:

We will continue to update these lists every 1-2 weeks.

New Roger Features

July 17, 2006 on 10:38 am | In Database News | Comments Off

Roger’s New Look - The Roger interface has been streamlined to reduce the non-Roger content on the page. Keyword/All But Slides remains the default search, but both can still be changed so if you want to search something like Journals & Serials by Title/Journal Title or Electronic Materials by Author. The Advanced Keyword Search option is available, and the More Search Options is now a mouseover drop-down menu under the search bar.

Related Topics - When you do a Keyword search in Roger, you may now see a Related Topics box in the center of tresults page (just above the Result page: 1 2 3 etc. line). This option may also appear at the book record level. Clicking this button will bring up a new window with possible related titles, subjects and/or authors. For example, a keyword search of Earthquake Engineering will offer related subjects like civil engineering, earthquake engineering research, earthquake hazard analysis, earthquake resistant design, International Association for Earthquake Engineering, partitions (building), shear walls, and structural design. All of these are hotlinked and clicking one will rerun your Roger search.

This is still a work in progress, and some Related Topics results will only a few links, or no links at all in some cases. If you have problems with this feature, please contact the Roger team.
