Search @ Amazon, Check in Roger
June 27, 2006 on 2:02 pm | In Tech Tools | Comments OffDid you know that you can set up a “bookmarket” on your browser to see if book you found at Amazon.com is held by the UCSD Libraries?
Go to the The LibraryLookup Bookmarklet Generator
- Enter http://roger.ucsd.edu as the Base URL.
- Enter UCSD Libraries as the Library Name.
- Select the first vendor, Innovative.
- Click Build your own LibraryLookup bookmarklet! On the next page you can test your bookmarklet, and then drag a copy of the link to the bookmark bar to add it to your browser. THIS SHOULD WORK WITH MOST BROWSERS.
When you’re in Amazon.com and on the page for the book you want, just click that bookmarklet. Another browser window will open, and the book will be searched automatically in ROGER. The search is based on ISBN numbers, so choose the Amazon record for the hardback edition (followed by paperback) for the best results.
You can also set up a bookmarklet to locate Amazon titles in Melvyl.
- Base URL = http://melvyl.cdlib.org
- Library Name = Melvyl
- Vendor = Aleph (Older); in the three boxes next to the vendor name, enter 020 in the first box, find-b in the second box, and cdl90 in the third.
S&E Summer Makeover
June 16, 2006 on 1:47 pm | In News & Events | Comments OffS&E users will enjoy a distinctive new Service Desk this fall, where both Circulation and Reference needs will be met. S&E’s main floor will be more open and inviting, with a highly visible Service Desk, improved traffic flow, reconfigured user spaces, and easier access to reference materials, current journals, and our new browsing collection.
S&E will remain open throughout our summer makeover.
During construction – mid June through early September –
• The current entrance to S&E will be blocked and The Gate will be raised.
• Circulation and Reference services will be relocated to the area near the temporary entrance.
• Circulation Unit staff will move to Lab B, in the southeast corner of S&E’s main floor.
• Our telephone numbers will remain the same.
We look forward to welcoming everyone to the renovated, reinvigorated S&E Library in the fall.
Fix for OVID INSPEC
June 9, 2006 on 10:58 am | In Known Problems and Down Time | Comments OffFor those having sporadic problems accessing OVID INSPEC, we think we have a solution. In your browser’s internet settings, go and delete the cookies. Today this approach worked for S&E computers with Netscape and IE that had Ovid access problems since Thursday.
The older workaround is to use another browser (or a colleague’s computer down the hall). If none of these works, call the S&E Reference Desk at x43258 or email science@library.ucsd.edu so that we can help you find the information you need.

U-T Interview: Michael Sailor (CHEM)
June 1, 2006 on 3:28 pm | In Faculty News, Science News & Hot Topics | Comments OffPeople to Watch: Michael J. Sailor, from the May 26 Union-Tribune.
We are developing several features of smart dust in collaboration with established or start-up companies for various applications in medicine, the pharmaceutical industry and environmental monitoring. For example, we are developing a homing capability that will allow these particles to target cancerous tumors in the body and then deliver a drug, and we are making microscopic sensors that can identify toxins in the air and in water.
For more information about Dr. Sailor’s research on porous silicon, nanosensors and “smart dust,” check out the Sailor Research Group page.
