Are Chemical Journals Too Expensive and Inaccessible?: A Workshop Summary to the Chemical Sciences Roundtable - Ned D. Heindel, Tina M. Masciangioli, and Eva von Schaper, Editors, Chemical Sciences Roundtable, National Research Council

This is an e-book available for free from the National Academies Press. You can view and print a page at a time, or register with your e-mail address to download it as a single PDF. More discussion on open access and chemistry journal publishing can be found in the May 16 C&EN article “Opening Access.”

On October 25-26, 2005, the Chemical Sciences Roundtable held a workshop to explore issues involving those who use and contribute to chemical literature, as well as those who publish and disseminate chemical journals. As a follow-up to the workshop, a summary was written to capture the presentations and discussions that occurred during the workshop. As a forum to discuss chemistry journals within the larger context of scientific, technical and medical journal publishing, the workshop covered whether chemists and chemical engineers have unique journal needs and, if so, whether these needs are being met in the current journal publishing environment. Workshop participants also tackled how open access publishing might be applied to the chemical literature, such as to provide authors more freedom to distribute their articles after publication and allowing free access to chemical literature archives.

SpecInfo (Spectra Database): Trial ends 5/31

Just a reminder. The SpecInfo trial ends at the end of the month.

We have arranged for a trial of Wiley InterScience’s SpecInfo, which offers online access to over two dozen MS, NMR and IR collections. Trial access will be available through the end of May. If the above link doesn’t work, use this one and select “SpecInfo on the Internet - NMR, IR, MS.”

Please try out SpecInfo and let us know what you think. Consider usability, functionality and content. Send all your comments to Teri Vogel.

USING SPECINFO
Netscape and IE are the recommended browsers for SpecInfo. It utilizes Java-based tools that are already part of your browsers, so there should be nothing to download. However, you may need to change the settings to allow popups from this site.

Look for some bright changes on the newly reorganized S&E home page!

The new, cleaner design is in three columns to take advantage of the full width of the page, and better organization of content will help users find what they want more easily. The “Featured Resources” column lets us highlight databases or other resources in a timely manner and pulls headlines from our blog to supply the homepage with fresh content.

Writing a research paper and need to manage your references? Using EndNote already, but want to find out about its “power” features like “Cite While You Write?” Installed EndNote on your computer, but not sure what to do with it? Take this class to learn to build your own EndNote reference libraries, and then use those libraries with Microsoft Word to seamlessly integrate the references into papers and create bibliographies. Find out how to use EndNote with your favorite science & engineering databases: SciFinder Scholar, Inspec, Web of Science, PubMed, etc.

SciFinder & CrossFire Installed in NSB 2303

May 11, 2005 on 10:09 am | In News & Events | Comments Off

SciFinder Scholar and Beilstein/Gmelin (CrossFire) have been installed on the computers in NSB 2303. Students do not need a code for this lab, but they will need their ACS login information.

Because of user restrictions, SciFinder has been installed on computers #1-5 only, while CrossFire has been installed on all of them.

Please consult our guides for more information about SciFinder and Beilstein/Gmelin. If you’re prompted for a username and password for CrossFire, refer to the UC CrossFire Site.
