The S&E Library presented two awards to graduate students at the Jacobs School of Engineering ResearchExpo on February 25. The awards ($50 gift certificates to the UCSD Bookstore) were given for “excellence in the demonstrated use of the engineering literature in a ResearchExpo poster” to Corey T. Love, from the Materials Science Program, and Farzad Parvaresh, from the Electrical and Computer Engineering Department. Their posters, along with others from the ResearchExpo, will be on display in the S&E Library in March. This is the third year S&E has awarded prizes at the ResearchExpo, an event sponsored by the Jacobs School of Engineering to showcase cutting edge research by faculty and students of the school. 208 posters were displayed this year.

CrossFire 7.0 for Beilstein/Gmelin Now Available

February 15, 2005 on 11:49 am | In News & Events | Comments Off

The CrossFire 7.0 client for Beilstein and Gmelin is now available from the UCLA CrossFire Beilstein/Gmelin site. Access to this site is restricted to UC IP addresses.

This is a major upgrade that includes dramatically improved interfaces for searching and viewing results, as well as some new features like alerts. For more information on CrossFire 7.0, consult the Quick User Guide (PDF-62 pg). We will be updating our Beilstein pages in the coming weeks.

To Download:
Select MDL CrossFire Commander V7 Download, then San Diego (UCSD). Please read the installation instructions and note the campus information (Host IP Address, License Group Name, User ID and Password), as you will need these to complete the setup and launch CrossFire.

CrossFire 7.0 is only compatible with Windows NT 4.0 SP6, Windows 2000 and Windows XP. Mac users must continue to use CrossFire 6.0, or a PC emulator if they want to use 7.0.

The campus contact has not yet been updated, so all questions about installation or requests for instruction should be directed to Teri Vogel at tmvogel@ucsd.edu.

This is a great opportunity to learn more about our services, to get assistance in using the electronic databases and other resources, and to preview the new CrossFire 7.0 for Beilstein and Gmelin.

SciFinder Scholar 2004.2 Release

February 9, 2005 on 9:19 am | In News & Events | Comments Off

SFS 2004.2 is now available from the SciFinder Scholar Client Download site at UCLA (access to this site is restricted to UC IP addresses).

2004.2 offers improved scrolling (PC’s only) and access to the SciFinder Scholar Toolbar for IE. If you are not sure what version you are running, you can check by going to Help >> About SciFinder Scholar the next time you’re in SFS.

This is a “full-installation” version that will overwrite SFS 2004 during installation. The new site.prf file, which you download and extract to the SciFinder folder, has a shorter timeout feature–10 minutes instead of 20–to maximize the number of available user seats.

The full release of SciFinder Scholar 2005 with programming to benefit MAC OS users finally, is targeted for late 2005.
