Not to be confused with TxtMob, which is also great, this new tool looks pretty interesting. Create polls that students can text the answers in to! Sort of like clickers, but without the clickers…As far as I can tell it’s free, and it certainly looks easy to set up (similar to Survey Monkey)–check it out!

iTunes U

Apple recently sent out one of its first emails promoting iTunes U, which claims to presently contain more than 50,000 educational audio and video files from top universities, museums and public media organizations from around the world. Here’s a link to more info and a video tutorial.

It’s rumored that UCSD is planning to participate at some point, but so far it’s only UC Berkeley and Davis that are listed.

I’m not sure exactly how you’d use this–I’m thinking presentations.. But Wordle is just really nifty. Paste in some text or a url and it creates a lovely little cloud for you. Try it!

New LOEX Quarterly

The new issue of LOEX quarterly is available and online. The instructions I received in the email announcement seem a little…involved. So I’ll include them here.

“Volume 35, Issue 1 of the LOEX Quarterly is now posted. Remember: as with the previous issue, the Quarterly has migrated to a new, more easily browseable format which also now has searching capability.

After you click on any of the articles you wish to read under “Volume 35″, it will take you - after about 5-10 seconds - to the article’s page in the digital repository, EagleSpace. To view the article, simply click on “View/Open”; if this the first time you have done so during your current web session, it will ask you for a log-in and password.
That information is:

That specific article will then open in a new window. Once you are done with that article, you can close that window, and then just hit the “Back” button in your browser while at the article’s EagleSpace page to go back to the web list of articles.”

First Year Student Assessment

This article might gives us some of the data for our student assumptions & IL, and might be worth delving into at a meeting at some point in the future. It is a huge report (may be slow to load too) – a quick peek at the summary is interesting. They identified 11 questions where students answered correctly less than 36% of the time.

Proficiencies for instruction librarians

I’m embarrassed to admit that I’m the last UCSD instruction librarian to discover that there are actually standards of proficiency for instruction librarians! I ran across these ACRL proficiencies while I was cleaning out my office in preparation for the upcoming re-carpeting of S&E in the October 2007 issue of C&RL News. It was a very interesting exercise to go through the list of proficiencies and see how many I actually possess! Check them out.
