ILL Request forms
December 21, 2007 on 6:34 pm | In BML/Library Info | No CommentsLooking for our ILL request forms on our new web site? Yes, the links to them disappeared from a couple spots on our new website in a little glitch that we will fix as soon as we’re back in January. In the meantime, here are the forms:
New Resource - Thieme ElectronicBook Library
December 10, 2007 on 5:18 pm | In Resource News | No CommentsThe Biomedical Library is now paying for campus-wide access to the Thieme ElectronicBook Library, a growing collection of online books.
The first group of books to be available in this collection is the Flexibook Atlases and Textbooks Series, a series of heavily-illustrated review textbooks, published in both the basic as well as the medical sciences.
We hope you find these online books useful.
We Get Suggestions
December 10, 2007 on 4:55 pm | In We Answer To You | No CommentsAn item from our suggestion box:
“It was a great idea to change room 218 to a quiet study zone, but could you please ask library staff not to talk loudly in the room next to the quiet study zone?”
We’re glad that you are finding the new Individual Study Area (where the photocopy room used to be) a good place for that extra-intensive studying. Although your message was not dated, I imagine that you had the unfortunate timing of trying to study in this area while the library staff had our annual holiday party. I admit it, we may have been a little raucous, but this year’s holiday party committee really outdid themselves to plan a fun event - great food, great decorations, games… man, it was awesome… oh well, I digress…
Anyway, I will be sure to ask the staff to do their best to keep it down in general, and especially during our infrequent social events. Thanks for your suggestion!
Visible Body: 3D Anatomy Online
December 8, 2007 on 3:02 pm | In Resource News | No CommentsI’ve been trying out the new Visible Body website - it’s really cool! It’s a free site that allows you to:
- View a detailed 3D model of the human body
- Turn body systems on and off
- Search for anatomical structures by name
- Click on anatomical structures to reveal names
This beta site requires registration for full functionality. You must use Internet Explorer 6.0 or higher on a computer running Windows XP, 2000 or Vista. It’s unclear how long access to this site will be free. The agreement says that the company reserves the right to “charge a fee for access thereto at any time.”
This is a very useful tool. Long may it be free!
TranStat: Tracking Infections Diseases
December 7, 2007 on 2:04 pm | In Biomedical News, Resource News, Tech Tools | No CommentsTranState is a new analytic tool (a software program) developed to help communities prepare for and track infections diseases including SARS, smallpox, or pandemic flu. Anonymous details are entered about an individual — i.e., age, sex, onset of symptoms, people with whom they have been in contact — but no patient identifying information.
The information entered into the program allows for a probability determination that one person contracted one of the infections diseases from another person. By estimating the infection rates, community officials can make decisions about possible school closures or how best to distribute medicines to areas where people are most likekly to become ill.
The software is freely available from the National Institutes of Health as a result of a sponsored research program called MIDAS (Models of Infections Disease Agent Study).
