Want to learn about some cool, web-based collaboration tools? The Krafty Librarian links to a recent Forbes.com article that includes nine such tools and she also describes five more. That’s fourteen collaboration tools in total. In case you’re wondering, the UCSD Libraries do subscribe to RefWorks, which is similar to EndNote except it is web-based and already paid for!

CDC enters the virtual world

February 26, 2007 on 5:06 pm | In Biomedical News | Comments Off

Since last fall, the CDC has had a presence in Second Life (an online 3D virtual world) and has offered a series of wall displays with links to the CDC’s web site. John Aderton at CDC reports that this virtual CDC averages a surprising 100+ visits each month.

In a second virtual world, Whyville, which is specially designed to appeal to children, the CDC promoted a health education campaign for flu vaccinations.

CDC states that exploring health education via virtual worlds is simply another strategy to publicize information.

On Wednesday, 2/28, we’re having an EndNote class from 4-5:30pm at the Biomedical Library and there are still some spots open. This class is for UCSD users who are new to EndNote (or just confused!) and covers setting up preferences, populating EndNote with information from our library databases like PubMed and Web of Science, and using EndNote with Microsoft Word to create a bibliography for a manuscript.

Sign up on our Classes web page.

(What’s EndNote? It’s a popular software program for managing citation information for use in creating bibliographies for papers, articles, or other manuscripts.)

UCSD Faculty Opportunity for Focus Group

February 23, 2007 on 4:25 pm | In Resource News | Comments Off

Thomson Scientific, producers of the Web of Science database, is looking for UCSD faculty/researchers to participate in an online bulletin board focus group. The focus of this discussion will be citation usage in ISI Web of Knowledge/Web of Science.

They are offering a $150 in American Express Gift Cheques to those who complete all aspects of this project.

A bulletin board focus group is a moderated, on-going Web-based chat, where participants can log on to answer posted questions at their convenience during the 3-day study period. Several questions will be posted each day, and participants will be asked to visit the site at least once each day to submit answers to the questions, skim others’ responses, and answer them if they choose.
The nice part of this process is that participants may visit the site at any time during the 3-day session, day or night, making it convenient to take part in the study. The total time investment is about 3 hours.
The group will begin on Wednesday, February 28th and run through Friday, March 2nd.

Please click on http://websurveyor.net/wsb.dll/83231/Onlinegrouprecruit-Researchers.htm to answer a few background questions. Once that is done, you will be contacted by someone from Thomson Scientific with details about the online group.

San Francisco 2/16/07 – The latest version of Science.gov, launched today, deploys “DeepRank” which allows search and relevancy ranking across full text of documents, when full text is available. In addition, Science.gov 4.0 adds a “refine results” option to narrow returns within a search, as well as an “email results” feature so that individuals may email important science information to themselves, friends and family, or colleagues. Version 4.0 offers more ways to view search results: by title, author or date, as well as by relevancy rank or source, as in earlier versions.

EndNote 10 users: update available

February 16, 2007 on 10:51 am | In Resource News | Comments Off

There is an update for EndNote 10 available at the EndNote website. This update makes it easier to use both your EndNote desktop software and the new EndNote Web software with the same copy of Microsoft Word. It also appears to solve a problem with author searching in PubMed when you use the Connect function.

Historical Journals Added to PsycARTICLES

February 6, 2007 on 1:42 pm | In Resource News | Comments Off

Most of the 58 APA journals included in the PsycARTICLES database now go back to volume 1, issue 1. Coverage for each journal now varies depending on when the journal began publishing or how far back backfiles were added for a particular journal. For instance, American Psychologist is now online from volume 1, 1946-to the present; and Professional Psychology goes back to volume 13, 1982 to the present. The earliest journal is Psychological Review, which began in 1894.

Articles published from 1985 forward are in both PDF and HTML format. Articles published prior to 1985 are available only in PDF format. All PDFs are searchable. The Library is in the process of updating each journal record in ROGER (The UCSD Libraries Catalog) to reflect the changes.

E-Journal link problems from Roger, e-journal lists

February 1, 2007 on 5:16 pm | In Outages | Comments Off

There is a problem with some links to e-journals from Roger and our e-journal web pages. This problem is at the California Digital Library and they are working on a fix. In the meantime, if you need to get to an e-journal, you may have better luck linking there through a journal title search in one of our databases like PubMed or Web of Science.
