Web Accelerators - Problem for UCSD Resources
September 22, 2006 on 9:48 am | In Resource News | Comments OffWeb accelerators help make web pages load faster but as their use becomes more wide spread a couple of problems are popping up - the result being that users are being denied access to licensed resources. The lack of access may be because of the way accelerators affect a user’s IP address or it may be a more serious issue where too many pages are downloaded from the vendor’s site causing a “breach of contract.”
To eliminate this potential problem, adjust the accelerator’s settings to not accelerate certain sites. You will need to add the domain for the UCSD resource you want to use, for example, nature.com.
For Google’s accelerator - you can find details on asking the accelerator to not accelerate a website at http://webaccelerator.google.com/support.html#preferences2 . If you have another accelerator, please check their information for how to adjust the settings.
Wireless - and roofless
September 20, 2006 on 4:20 pm | In Building | Comments OffHave you taken a look at the walkway area that extends south from the Biomedical Library entrance towards Osler Lane? There are some big cement bench areas out there with nice planters and sweet-smelling flowering trees. We just checked it out and our wireless Internet connection extends out there as well - at least as far as the second big “nook” area. This area is probably too sunny in the morning for productive use of laptops, but in the afternoon when the sun goes behind the library that area is very pleasant. Perfect for catching up on a little e-mail while having lunch or a phone conversation.
