PubMed’s Abstract display
June 28, 2006 on 10:06 am | In Resource News | Comments OffPubMed has created a new “AbstractPlus” display format and they appear to be experimenting with it, sometimes making it the default when you click through to an abstract, while other times showing the normal Abstract display. The AbstractPlus has a nice feature of showing you the top related articles in a panel to the right, but it also shoves the UC E-Links button down below the article’s abstract. If the abstract is long, you might have to scroll down to see the UC E-Links button.

Neurons Grown from Embryonic Stem Cells Restore Function in Paralyzed Rats
June 21, 2006 on 9:38 am | In Biomedical News | Comments Off[As reported in NIHPRESS Digest - 15 Jun 2006 to 20 Jun 2006 (#2006-92)]
For the first time, researchers have enticed transplants of embryonic stem cell-derived motor neurons in the spinal cord to connect with muscles and partially restore function in paralyzed animals. The study suggests that similar techniques may be useful for treating such disorders as spinal cord injury, transverse myelitis, amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS), and spinal muscular atrophy. The study was funded in part by the NIH’s National Institute of Neurological Disorders and Stroke (NINDS).

If you’d like a little structure to your reading, consider signing up for the Social Sciences and Humanities Library’s third annual “Worship A Good Book” summer reading/reviewing contest.
