Set up a Roger Bookmarklet

December 20, 2005 on 1:06 pm | In Tech Tools | Comments Off

If you’re looking for books on amazon.com (or another book site) and want to see if the UCSD Libraries own a particular book (so you can borrow it rather than buy it), follow these LibraryLookup Project instructions to create a Roger “bookmarklet:”

1) Go to Jon Udell’s Radio Blog

2) Click on “here” in the first paragraph

3) Enter http://roger.ucsd.edu in the “Base URL” box, and UCSD Libraries in the “Library Name” box.

4) Check the checkbox for “Innovative.”

5) Click the “Build Your Own LibraryLookup Bookmarklet” button below.

6) Test the bookmarklet, following the instructions that are given, to make sure that it goes to Roger, the UCSD online catalog. If it works, drag the hyperlinked “UCSD Libraries” to your browser toolbar.

7) Use the bookmarklet: The next time you are searching amazon.com, for instance, display the record for a book and then click on the UCSD Libraries bookmarklet. Voila! Roger will open, do the search, and let you know if the UCSD Libraries own the book or not.

Note: This tip does not necessarily work with all booksellers’ websites or with all browsers.

PLoS Biology launches Cell Biology collection

December 14, 2005 on 1:15 pm | In Resource News | Comments Off

PLoS Biology, the flagship open-access journal from the Public Library of Science, has launched a new site, PLoS Cell Biology. This site brings together the cell biology-related articles from PLoS Biology journal with synopses of each article written for the public by professional science writers. The goal is to add value to work published in PLoS Biology by making the research more accessible to students, scientists from other fields, and the public at large. The site also features some original content such as “primers” - articles that seek to explain complex subjects, as well as editorials. As with PLoS Biology, the content is free to read. It remains to be seen whether databases like PubMed will pick it up for coverage, since it’s not exactly a journal.

December 9, 2005 on 10:59 am | In Resource News | Comments Off

The UC Libraries’ subscription to the BIOSIS Previews database is moving from its current home on the Ovid system to the ISI Web of Knowledge platform, the same as we use for Web of Science. This was announced in summer and both systems have been available in parallel during Fall. The Ovid subscription will stop at the end of 2005 and beginning in January, we will have access only via ISI.
