BML: Old News archive

November 30, 2005 on 4:49 pm | In Resource of the Month Archives | Comments Off

Our new website offers a Resource of the Month section as well as this blog for tracking news and new library resources. Previously, we had a News area with similar info, and when a new story came along, the old content was bumped to an “old news” page. Here’s where you can find those items - butterflies, open access, etc.

Entrance Survey This Week

November 28, 2005 on 9:04 pm | In BML/Library Info | Comments Off

Can you spare twenty seconds? If you come to the Biomedical Library this week (Nov. 28-Dec. 2), a library staff member may ask you two short questions as you enter the library: what is your status (faculty, staff, student, etc.) and why have you come to the library today. The purpose of the entrance survey is to find out who is using the library and what they are doing. The same survey was performed last year before the library moved to Geisel, and will be undertaken again after the library returns to its permanent location next to the Basic Science Building in late 2006. We are interested in finding out how the library is being used so that we can plan our services appropriately, both in our temporary location in Geisel, and in the new library-to-be. Thank you for your cooperation and patience!

Social Software for Science

November 23, 2005 on 3:02 pm | In Tech Tools | Comments Off

If you maintain a big list of bookmarks or favorites in your web browser, you know how useful they can be. Wouldn’t it be great to find out what your colleagues have bookmarked? Social software lets you do this. When you sign up, you can post items that are of interest to you, along with a “tag” to describe the overall category they might fall into. You can then see who else has the same sites or tags in common. Here are a few popular social software sites:

del.icio.us - lets you create a set of online bookmarks and then share them with others and find other people with similar interests. There’s lots of recreational stuff in here, but do a search for something like “microarray” to see how scientists are using this.

Connotea - “store your reference list online” - you can also use this for bookmarking favorite web pages. This is a free service of Nature and is focused on science & academic users.

Cite U Like - “a free service to help academics to share, store, and organise the academic papers they are reading. ”

If you know of other similar services where UCSD users are sharing information, please let us know - we’re interested in seeing where this type of service goes and how we might be able to use it to share information with you and learn about new areas of research where we might need to add to our collections.
