Arts Libraries Extreme Makeover!

What the…?

The Arts Library has begun the first phase of our renovation! Music Scores have moved over to CPNM (that’s Current Periodicals Newspapers & Microforms) which is on the same floor of Geisel. The Art & Architecture and Music current periodicals have also been moved over to CPNM. We’ve also moved all of the books in Controlled Circulation (the ones in the locked shelving) to the Annex off site. This means it will take a day or so for you to get one of those books titled “con circ” in the online library catalogue. So now it looks like a roller rink, until the next big change..Stay tuned for more updates and exciting news!!

RIP Stockhausen

Karlheinz Stockhausen, the innovative composer died this week at home in Germany.

Hugely influential to everyone from the Beatles to Frank Zappa, he was also considered very controversial–for instance when he said that the September 11th attacks were “the greatest work of art one can imagine”. Yipes.

“In one of his lager-scale operas, ”Licht,” Stockhausen tried to capture all of the facets of the world with sound and noises and set them in relation to the human spirit, speech, smells and colors.

The piece, which took 25 years to compose, is an enormous sonic representation of the seven days of the week. So large is the work’s scope that multiple scenes needed to depict Thursday alone last four hours.” From the AP piece at NYT.com

Beautiful Bug Art

It’s really a coincidence, all the bug stuff lately, I promise. Look at this! This guy dips insects (hopefully, just their tiny feet) and then lets them walk around on paper. I feel a little sorry for the bugs though..
